Amazing Zulu basket made in South Africa. These baskets are made using strips of naturally waxy palm fronds wrapped around coils of wild grasses. Dyes are made from organic materials as diverse as flower petals and mud. The smaller ones like this one are also called “beer baskets” as they are used still in some parts of South Africa as a beer storage. These are watertight baskets, the coils swollen when liquid is added. The large Zulu basket is traditionally a wedding gift as well. These baskets are so rare some colors are available depending on the season and different materials can be used to dye such as flower petals and mud. Approximately 12.25" Tall x 12" Wide.
